Addressing The Issues
The primary area of concern in Cooper-Young is the crime rate, and the main things they can do to fight crime are being done:
- They are proactive in their neighborhood watch
- They warn residents to be vigilant
- They discourage crime by not being careless and leaving belongings in sight in vehicles/outdoors
- They are active in their community associations.
In addition, the community has used their sense of communal responsibility and engagement to seek grant fund from the City of Memphis, that will allow the residents to install security cameras in areas that are susceptible to crime.
They may have to increase police patrolling the neighborhood if crime increases, but for now the crime appears to be minimal compared to surrounding communities.
One other option that Cooper-Young has to address their crime rate is to work with the residents of the communities surrounding them. We know that these communities deal with a greater rate of crime than Cooper-Young currently does, but at one time, Cooper-Young also dealt with more crime. If the community organizers in Cooper-Young reached out and offered their support, resources, and insights from their movements towards a lower crime rate to their neighbors, it would benefit not just Cooper-Young, but also the surrounding neighborhoods.
